I finally got on facebook this year because the organizers of my 20th high school reunion were using it. What a resource.

What was really cool in terms of going to a reunion was that from facebook you already knew the basics of peoples "stories" - where they live, where they work, whether they are married or have kids, where they've travelled, hobbies, etc.

This meant that at the reunion (with over 150 people there) I could make a point of chatting with certain people, with whom I shared a past experience (ie travel in Pakistan), had kids the same age, or who might be valuable in my professional network.

As you say, efficient.

Hey Warner - love the seine net reference! I grew up purse seining in AK so quite familiar with it. We had a few sets (usually an hour long process) where we caught over fifty thousand lbs of salmon in one haul. Great analogy to Facebook and its reach.

I had the chance to meet and talk with the author of a fascinating WIRED article this past weekend. This is worth a read.

It's so comforting to know my Seine Net analogy actually worked... :-) ~ Jason
